Court dismisses bail plea of IAS officer's associate

Last Updated 14 January 2011, 14:07 IST

Special Judge Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal refused to free Vineet Kumar, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Kolkata-based Temptation Food Pvt Ltd on bail, terming the charges against him as serious.

"The material collected and investigation so far shows that allegations against accused Vineet are serious and in view of the observation, I am not inclined to grant bail to the accused," the judge said.

Public Prosecutor Rajeev Mohan opposed the bail plea of Kumar contending he had provided accommodation and a vehicle to Singh, then working as director Internal Security in Union Home Ministry in New Delhi. He obliged the officer as he wanted in return information about security clearance of a file relating to United Kingdom-based firm Telcordia Technologies Inc, the prosecutor said.

Arguing for Kumar's bail, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta contended the accused extended the benefits of house and car to Singh but did not seek any favour in return.
He said there was no purpose in keeping Kumar in custody as more than 50 days have passed since his arrest.

The court did not allow Gupta's plea and rejected Kumar's bail application. Kumar was arrested here on November 23 last year. This is for the second time that the bail plea of Kumar was dismissed by the court.

Kumar and Singh were apprehended by Delhi Police's Special Cell in November last following the registration of a case under Prevention of Corruption Act and IPC relating to criminal conspiracy.
