Bill proposes five-year term for mayor

Last Updated 20 December 2010, 19:15 IST

The bill, which  was on the backburner for the last four years, proposes to bring all the civic bodies under one entity - Bangalore Metropolitan Planning Committee (BMPC).

At present, civic bodies like the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, the Bangalore Development Authority, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company and the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority that are functioning without proper coordination, will be brought under one umbrella.

In addition, the Bill also suggests structural changes in the BBMP. It proposes a five-year term and more powers for the mayor, instead of the present 11-month term.

"The bill gives two options for a mayor’s election - he/she can either be elected directly by voters or by the elected representatives of the Council," said an official.
