Lalu to meet election panel over irregularities in EVMs

Last Updated 22 December 2010, 05:49 IST

"Lalu will meet top officials of the commission in New Delhi on Dec 23 and petition a complaint about the irregularities in EVMs. He will meet the officials with a team of technical experts," a senior RJD leader, who is close to Lalu Prasad, told IANS Wednesday.
RJD won less than half the seats it secured in 2005 in the October-November 2010 Bihar assembly polls.

Lalu Prasad then said there was "some mystery" behind the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) landslide victory.

He said many seats won by the BJP or JD-U were not the strongholds of either.
"I am not accusing anyone, but there is some mystery in their victory... we will find it out," Lalu Prasad had said.

Lalu Prasad's ally Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan last week also cast doubts on the transparency in voting. He demanded that the Election Commission consider restoration of ballot papers.

RJD began its two day review meeting here Tuesday to assess the rout in the assembly polls. "The party MPs, legislators, senior leaders and party district presidents are assessing the causes of party's debacle in the assembly polls," RJD leader Ram Kirpal Yadav said.

Another RJD leader Ghulam Ghosh said the party will come out with cause of its worst rout in one and half decades.

RJD won 22 seats and the LJP three in the recent assembly elections, down from 54 and 11 respectively. On the other hand, JD-U won 115 seats and BJP 91 seats in the 243-member house in the polls held Oct 21-Nov 20, up from the 87 and 55 they won in the 2005 elections.
