And chic and hip style is one of the top priorities for those who plan to head out and let their hair down. Designers tell Metrolife what’s in vogue this Christmas and New Year and also provide some tips on how one can stay fashionable this party season.

Dresses and gowns are synonymous with the season, says Gayathri, a designer. But what one must keep in mind while picking out a dress is to make sure the fit is right. “But that doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself to just dresses. One can also go in for three-fourths or leggings and team them up with a classy kurti. One can even go in for a well-fitting pants with a wrap around top or an off-shouldered top,” she adds.

Say Christmas and the colours that come to mind are red, green and white. Also making its way back to the top is the classic black. “For any Christmas party, a majority of women come wearing red. But if you want to stand out in the crowd, it is always better to add other colours or blend in two colours to bring a balance,” says Nainika, another designer, who suggests a silver dress with a red or green scarf or a red dress with a white belt as options.

Designer Sanchita Ajjampur says that the colours for the New Year are inspired from the Indian spices like rosemary, pepper corn, mustard, cardamom etc. “One can bring in the New Year by trying out some of the latest trends,” adds Sanchita, who suggests glamourous jumpsuits or printed shift dresses with delicate surface embellishments and embroideries in red or navy blue.

Men too can experiment and add to their personality. Suggests Riyaz, a designer, “There’s nothing better than a black tuxedo or formal wear for men during Christmas and New Year. A splash of colour can be added to the formal wear via a bright shirt or a tie. Hats and bow ties are completely in. So tweak your attire with these accessories.”

One common advice that all designers have is to give comfort a priority. “A party will surely involve dancing. So wearing tight and fitted clothing is a complete no-no. No matter how fashionable one’s attire is, it will look bad if the person is not comfortable in it,” sums up Gayathri.
