WELLBEING

QI am an 18-year-old boy weighing 53 kg. I am 5 feet 4 inches tall. I want to grow taller. Will tablets help?

A

As you are only 18 years old, you still have time to grow tall. I would recommend that you adopt a healthy lifestyle rather than taking tablets or supplements. A healthy lifestyle means having nutritious meals every day and being as active as possible. A nutritious diet includes eating 3 servings of vegetables, 2 servings of fruit, 6 servings of wholegrain cereals, a bowl of green leafy vegetables, 2 servings of reduced fat milk and milk products, and a fistful of nuts every day.

Being active is essential to keep your muscles healthy. Devote at least 30 minutes a day to walking, jogging, running or any other sport you like. On weekends, try something more intense than a walk, like cycling or swimming.

QI am 21 years old. Every time I wash my face, my skin turns dry and I have to apply a lot of moisturiser. I also have small boils on my forehead. How do I protect my skin?

A Drink water — lots of it — to start moisturising your skin from within. Drink at least eight glasses of water every day to keep your skin supple. Water helps remove skin-dulling toxins from your body. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oil from the skin. Limit your bath or shower time to about 15 minutes or less and use warm, rather than hot, water. Avoid harsh, drying soaps. If you have dry skin, it’s best to use cleansing creams and shower gels with added moisturisers. The boils on your forehead may be due to sunburn or dandruff. Please consult a dermatologist so that the skin lesions can be examined and appropriately managed.
