The petitioner, Sunil Sharma had alleged that the cards were of substandard quality and the data stored in the cards could be easily erased. He had stated that the card needs to be of good quality as it will be a multipurpose identity card and feature crucial information of the individual.

The Division Bench comprising Justice J S Khehar and Justice A S Bopanna dismissed the petition.

It could be recalled that representatives of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), who have been entrusted with making the cards, staged a demonstration in the court hall defending the quality of the cards.

They had submitted the details on the manufacture of the cards to the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar.
