'Women can spearhead development better'

Development would have taken place exponentially, only if women had been the policy makers, said retired principal of Yuvaraja’s College Dr K Sumitra Bai.

She was speaking at the inauguration of a State-level workshop on ‘Women and culture’  organised by the Kannada and Culture Department and Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), here on Wednesday.

Also, if women were involved in policy-making then they would make laws that would consider the  humanitarian aspects necessary for leading a sustainable life.

Observing that women have emerged from their traditional role as homemakers, Dr Sumitra Bai said that they have done exceedingly well in male dominated areas such aerospace and mountaineering.

She cited Kalpana Chawla and Bachendri Pal as the examples in the realm.

She said that every day is a challenge for a women. Appreciating the efforts taken up by women, Dr Sumitra Bai said that they have been managing homes from time immemorial.
However, she reiterated that every woman leads a challenging life and every minute is a challenge for her.

Stressing on the goodness in the person, she bemoaned that the younger generation is losing out on values.

Kannada and Culture Department Joint Director Ka Ta Chikkanna said that the workshop is aimed at infusing ideas and thoughts about the role of women in conserving language, culture and environment. He said that there is a need to create cultural ambassadors among the younger generation.

KSOU Vice Chancellor Prof K S Rangappa and Kannada Studies and Research Department Chairman Dr A Rangaswamy, Registrar K R Jayaprakash Rao were also present.
