Last Updated 20 January 2011, 18:45 IST

The couple have been identified as Poovappa Gowda (60) and his wife Padmavathi (55), both residents of Kanchana. Police said the couple committed suicide by consuming poison mixed with honey in their plantation.

It is said that Poovappa was constructing a new house and had obtained a loan of Rs 20 lakh. As he could not repay the loan as the lenders were repeatedly asking him to repay the money, the couple might have taken the extreme step, said the couple’s son Shivarama Gowda in a statement given to the Uppinangady police.
