JOIN USUnable to bear the ignominy, the woman belonging to Kashimpur village in Dhusuri area allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison and was now convalescing at a hospital here, Inspector in-Charge (IIC) of Dhusuri police station, Jagmohan Mohanty, said.
Police has recorded the statement of the woman.
The mother of two complained that villagers forcibly tonsured her and paraded in the village road on Sunday accusing her of having illicit relation with her nephew, he said adding the villagers sought to punish for the alleged immoral activity.
The woman's husband, Niranjan said several villagers armed with lethal weapons dragged his wife from the house tonsured and paraded her in the village to sounds of instruments like "murdanga" and "jhanja".
"I could not stop them as they threatened to kill me", he said adding, "some villagers who have bitter relation with my family hatched this plan to humiliate us and did all this in front of a local TV channel."
Mohanty said investigation was in progress after receiving the FIR on Thursday
