Speaking to newspersons after meeting Chief Minister Yeddyurappa at his residence on Race Course Road on Monday morning, Nilekani said, “A major problem today with regard to identity is that many government systems have many duplicates resulting in fraud.”
Elaborating on the work to be done by UIAI, Nilekani said that it will create a centralised, national database of Indians. A national network of verification will be created so that people can verify the claims made by anyone. Bio-metric technology can be used for fingerprints to create an unique number for every individual, the chairperson added.
On the priority tasks for UIAI, Nilekani said, "First I have to find an office!" He did not give a clear answer to the time frame needed by stating that he had to take stock of the situation first. Chief Minister, who felicitated Nilekani said, “It was an honour that a Kannadiga was selected to carry out such a revolutionary scheme.”
