Giving fashion its due

The awards are intended to promote a career in fashion among the young men and women across the country. A series of competitions will be held across the country and after several rounds, the finalists will be chosen.   

Talking about what prompted the department to come up with such an award, Usha Kumar, Dean of Mount Carmel University said that they had noticed many young women use the glamour degree to get married, some others chose to get into entrepreneurship or do an apprenticeship under an established designer and others even got into merchandising. “A few others pursue higher education. While there are a few institutions that offer a PG diploma in fashion, others are market driven. But often fashion is looked down upon. We thought such an award would boost the profession and inspire those wanting to take it up,” explains Usha.

She comments that they have often noticed that fashion is not a socially approved profession. “It is often viewed as vulgar or a demeaning profession. There is a need to give this profession some dignity,” she adds. 

Chetan, of the Fashion Department points out that since fashion and education are intertwined and interdependent and both are steeped in a matrix of creativity, innovation and passion, the award will encourage students to be active participants in popularising the profession.

The competitions will start on February 14 and 15 in Hyderabad, 17 and 18 in Chennai and 21 and 22 in Bangalore. The best five designers and models will be chosen from these three rounds.

These young men and women will be groomed and after an extensive photoshoot will be ready for the finale on March 5. 

The grooming will be done by Mithilesh with inputs from Prasad Bidapa.
