Illegal sand mining unit raided, hi-tech machines seized

It was said that few persons were engaged in sand mining using pumps at Donikadu in Mallur near Balele. They had already stored 300 loads of sand. Similarly, even at Kottageri and Biloor more than 100 loads of sand was being transported illegally. One load sand was sold for Rs 2,500, it was said. Acting on a tip off, Assistant Commissioner Dr Ravi raided the spot.

The miscreants who were involved in illegal sand mining fled the spot leaving behind the machines. The officials have seized Rs 4 lakh worth traditional boat, pumpset attached with hi-tech machine, pipe and two litre diesel.

Dr Ravi and Tahsildar Hanumantharayappa also took two trucks transporting sand into custody and a case has been filed. The team led by AC also visited the banks of river Lakshmanatheertha at Kottageri and inspected hundred loads of sand mining.

The AC also directed the Mines and Geology department offcials Dhanalakshmi and Chaitra
to file criminal case under Government land encroachment Act 192 against a person who had encroached government land and was involved in illegal sand mining.

Later, speaking with mediapersons, Dr Ravi said that he had received complaints on the illegal sand mining in South Kodagu. Legal action will be taken against the miscreants involved in illegal sand mining.
