AP school sends HIV+ve boy home

Last Updated 14 July 2009, 16:54 IST

The boy had been admitted about a week ago in the school in Timmapur village, about 150 km from here. When other parents came to know of the child’s admission in the school, they objected. The headmaster then asked the boy not to come to school anymore.

“Where will I send him now? How can he get educated?” said the boy’s grandmother. She is taking care of the boy as his mother died two months ago. The boy’s family contacted the media to highlight the discrimination. According to the family, the boy’s mother had full-blown AIDS. His father who is a labourer in the Gulf is not here. The couple has a daughter too.

The headmaster however denied any discrimination saying he had asked him to stop coming to school because he was under-aged. He, however, admitted that some parents had objected to the boy’s presence.

The grandmother who enrolled the boy in the school said she had already lost her daughter-in-law and now her grandson was being penalised. “Please tell the HM to give him admission,” she begged of the media. The village has only one primary school.
