Though the couple have been living separately for a year, Pravanjan Mallick, former captain of Orissa Ranji team, allegedly called up Sini Mohanty, inviting her for an urgent discussion on Valentine’s Day.
However, the meeting had a tragic end with the cricketer physically assaulting Sini inside his car.
The cricketer, who was in an inebriated state, allegedly threw her out of the car near PMG Square. Pravanjan Mallick was taken into police custody by Bhubaneswar police on Monday night.
He was sent to jail on Tuesday after a local fast track court rejected his bail application.
Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Himansu Lal said that Mallick had been booked under different sections of the Indian Panel Code(IPC) including 307, 498(A), 323 and 506.
The couple had a love marriage in 2002. However, subsequently differences had cropped up between the two. A divorce case is already on between them.
