JD(S) leader and former chief minister S Bangarappa on Tuesday said Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa deserves to be disqualified from the State Assembly for having furnished false information to the Election Commission (EC).

He accused the Chief Minister of providing incorrect information about his assets in an affidavit that he filed with the EC while contesting from Shikaripura Assembly seat in 2008.

Request for action

Bangarappa, who contested unsuccessfully against Yeddyurappa in the 2008 polls, told a press conference in Bangalore on Monday, that he had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka and the returning officer of the Shikaripur Assembly constituency, demanding action against Yeddyurappa for violating EC regulations and provisions of the Representation of People’s Act 1951.

Details of assets which Yeddyurappa had filed before the Lokayukta during 2007 and those in the affidavit before the returning officer of Shikaripura constituency did not tally, Bangarappa claimed.

Yeddyurappa has not disclosed to the returning officer an LIC policy for a sum assured Rs 1.70 lakh and rental advance amounting to Rs 33 lakh received from Adarsh Group, one of the property developers named in the land scam the chief minister is embroiled in, Bangarappa said.

Citing another instance, Bangarappa charged the chief minister with declaring ownership of 29 kg silver when the returns were filed before Lokayukta in December
2007, while he had declared only 25 kg in the affidavit submitted to the returning
officer.

Mid-term polls

Replying to queries, Bangarappa predicted that the State will witness mid-term polls in the coming months.

“Yeddyurappa, who is facing corruption charges, will not resign. Instead, he will dissolve the Assembly. The BJP Central leadership has been a complete failure in controlling Yeddyurappa”, the JD(S) leader said.
