<p>Vikas Mandal (19), a native of West Midnapore district of West Bengal, was asleep on a pavement near the Metro station under construction in Byappanahalli when the tipper lorry belonging to the URC Constructions killed him while the vehicle was reversing. The victim died on the spot, police said. <br /><br />Driver Shankar (32) of Tamil Nadu, apparently could not spot Mandal sleeping on the footpath. <br /><br />The Indiranagar traffic police arrested Shankar based on a complaint filed by S Kannan (22), the on-site engineer who witnessed the gory mishap. A case of causing death due to negligence and rash driving under Sections 304 (A) and 279 of the IPC has been booked.<br /><br />Mandal was not on duty when the incident occurred, police said. <br /><br />Incidentally, Vikas’ father Paresh Mandal and his brother Gopal Mandal were working on the night shift some distance away at the Metro construction site. <br /><br />The incident is second such of its kind this year. On January 14, 2011, Makhan, a labourer from Madhya Pradesh, was killed when a tipper lorry hit him inside the Byappanahalli depot. <br /><br />Curiously though, BMRCL officials and URC Constructions refused to discuss the accident. Vikas Mandal’s body was taken to the victim’s native place after a post-mortem. <br /><br />Man drinks acid, dies<br /></p>.<p>A 30-year-old man of Ulsoor died in a hospital on Tuesday morning, hours after he accidentally drank from a bottle of acid used for cleaning metals and hard surfaces. <br /><br />Vijaya Kumar (30), an electrician from Ulsoor, drank the acid kept in a bottle near Someshwara Temple around 9 am, police said. <br /><br />Kumar and his friends were busy in the preparations for Maha Shivaratri. They were painting the lanes to spruce them up for the festival. <br /><br />Apparently, the acid was kept in a bottle, to be used as a cleaning agent after painting. A thirsty Kumar drank the substance, assuming it to be water. Within no time, he was in distress and had to be rushed to a hospital on CMH Road where he died at 5 pm, police. <br /></p>
