College professor bashed up by ABVP workers, FIR against 3

Ashok Choudhary was taken by surprise as the ABVP members forced him out of the class, blackened his face and then thrashed him. A girl member hit him with her sandals and then kicked him.

Choudhary was rescued from the attackers by his colleagues. Dean P P Shastri told PTI that those who thrashed the professor were not from his college. He also denied the ABVP charge that Choudhary molested some girls of the college.

On the complaint filed by him, police have registered an FIR against three ABVP workers, along with 50-60 other unidentified activists. Those named in the FIR are Ankit, Rohit and Ashwant, police said, adding no arrests have been made so far.

Earlier, in the morning, ABVP workers had first accosted the Dean, seeking to know what action had been taken against a girl hosteler, who had allegedly created ruckus in the hostel, in a drunken state.

The ABVP workers alleged that Choudhary had an illicit relationship with this girl and was shielding her. The Dean told them a committee had been formed to probe the matter. But not satisfied with the reply, the workers attacked Choudhary.

This is not the first time that ABVP members have targeted teachers. In 2006, H S Sabharwal, head of the political science department of Madhav College in Ujjain, died after violence in the college over student union elections when he was allegedly beaten up by ABVP activists. He later died in a hospital.

A Maharashtra court in 2009 acquitted six students accused in the case due to lack of evidence against them.
