'I left Japan yesterday'

Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said “tsunami has damaged the international airport from where I had boarded the flight. The airport has been temporarily shut down.”

“A total of 25 persons from MIT, Manipal and 12 persons from NITK, Surathkal had been to Tokyo to take part in international conference. After completing the conference, others had left Japan eraly. However, I stayed in my sister’s husband Dr Achal Kumar’s house for few days,” he added.

He said “my relatives are staying 30 km away from Tokyo and are safe. I received a mail from them at 2 pm stating that they are safe.”

Dr U K Krishna, a Ayurveda practitioner from Udupi is in Tokyo and is safe. His daughter Deepika said “my father has been visiting Japan for the last few years. We received a call from him in the afternoon. After receiving the call, we are relieved.”

In Mangalore

Ravindra Kotian of Pejathadi in Sacheripete has been residing in Japan for the last 18 years. He is a chef in the Maharaja Group of Hotels. He had come to native two years ago.

Naveen Chandra, Kotian’s son-in-law said: “We tried calling him as soon as we heard the news of tsunami. However, we could not connect him. However, he called us at 6 pm to inform that he is safe.”

“My father recently joined Maharaja Group of Hotels. Earlier, he was in TBS group of hotels. As he had recently changed his job, we were not sure of his address,” said daughter Prashanthi.

He had said that the hotel in which he was working had experienced tremor in the morning. However, all the telephone connections were disconnected. His working place is 250 km away from the tsunami hit region, said Kotian’s son Vinod.
