JOIN USArshad steals the show on day of long jumpers
Arshad leapt to 7.19 metres for a new personal best, reducing to rubble the mark of 7.07 metres set by HY Lokesh in 2007. But the 19-year-old did not have it easy, as Akash breathed down his neck with a consistent series of jumps.
Mysorean Arshad, a I year BA student of Al-Ameen College in Bangalore, went past Lokesh’s mark with a third-round effort of 7.11 metres and improved it to 7.19 in the next round but Akash came close with two 7.05-metre jumps before kicking the sand at 7.18 metres, an agonising one centimetre short of the gold-winning mark.
There was another fascinating duel in the under-14 long jump, where Praneetha Pradeep of Indo-German edged team-mate Srishti Sunil on a countback after both had achieved 5.09 metres, bettering Srishti’s 2008 mark of 4.92 metres. Praneetha’s next best effort was a 5.07, compared to Srishti’s 5.06. Long jump, indeed, seemed to be the flavour of the day as another record was busted in the under-16 boys’ section, with Suraj Mandal of Alva’s College Mudabidri improving GN Bopanna’s 2004 record of 6.30, reaching 6.38 metres.
Alva’s continued their impressive showing, claiming seven gold medals on the day, with Khasim Badasaab’s hammer throw meet record of 49.79 metres embellishing their performance in the afternoon.
KA Bharath of Yuva, the silver winner in the U-18 5000M, was disqualified for being overaged, the first such case here. Sreedhar of SAI Dharwad, who finished third, was elevated to the second spot.
Meanwhile, Canara Bank’s HM Jyothi, whose participation was questioned by some officials on Friday, defended herself, reiterating that she was just doing her duty towards her employers. “I am just representing my club, I am not staking any claim for state selection,” said the sprinter, who now runs for Andhra Pradesh.
