Nearly 1.5 lakh fresh cases of breast cancer are identified in India every year. Nearly 44 per cent of patients who are diagnosed with cancer in the City, do not receive proper treatment, according to the ICMR report 2001-03.

These were some of the startling statistics that were brought to the fore during the launch of Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Centre, at Narayana Hrudayalaya here on Friday. The Cancer Helpline was also inaugurated.

The hospital started functioning two weeks ago with 500 beds, in a four-storeyed building. Over 100 people have already been treated.

Biocon CMD Kiran Majumdar Shaw, who was also instrumental in conceptualising the  hospital, said the Centre will also take up research.

Dr Devi Shetty, chairman of Narayana Hrudayalaya, said the hospital will also offer treatment to patients coming from poor families.

You can call the cancer helpline on 080- 22152020
