KRRS seeks support price for areca

The protesters passed through Mahaveera Road, K M Road before reaching Nada kacheri. The protesters urged the government to solve the problems being faced by the arecanut growers.

A memorandum was submitted to the Prime Minister through Revenue Inspector Achyuth.
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha President Gopal Shetty said 80 per cent of the growers grow arecanut in Kalasa. However, they have incurred loss due to ‘Suli koleyuva roga,’ ‘beruhula’ and other diseases.

Owing to the fruit rot disease and shortage of labourers, the production cost of arecanut is Rs 12,000 per quintal. After the experts visit and inspection of the spot, the government should announce support price for arecanut.

The protesters said “arecanut plantations have been destroyed owing to the yellow leaf disease in the region. In fact, the Gorakhnath Singh committee had recommended the government to waive off the loans borrowed by the farmers.

Accordingly, the government should waive off the loan borrowed by the arecanut growers. Seventy five per cent financial assistance should be extended to all the farm equipment.

The protest was attended by the labourers except Sangha President Gopala Shetty.
