The Bench of Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly asked Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising to inform on Monday about the Centre’s act of passing the notification in this regard after CBI told the Court that it was ready to take up the probe.

The Court also asked the law officer to intimate it on Tuesday on the Centre’s view on CBI proposing the name of senior counsel U U Lalit for appointment as senior public prosecutor for conducting trial in 2G spectrum allocation scam case allegedly involving Raja and several others.

Senior advocate Lalit has recently appeared for Hasan Ali Khan in the Supreme Court to challenge an interim order of the apex Court canceling bail of the Pune stud farm house owner in the case relating to money laundering and alleged stashing of black money in overseas banks.

Senior advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the CBI and ED, informed the Court that Lalit could be appointed as public prosecutor in view of his tremendous experience in criminal law after advocate Prashant Bhushan, counsel for NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), pointed out the matter before the Court during the hearing.

Bhushan also brought to the notice of the Court that the Centre was yet to issue a notification for the CBI probe into the alleged suicide of Batcha.
