Power cuts disrupt water supply

Last Updated 06 April 2011, 18:53 IST

According to a BWSSB official, the power shutdown happened after a snag in the transformer and not due to interruption in power supply.

Supply hit

"The transformer was shut down, after we found welding wires on the transformer which may have been dropped by birds. The birds might have mistaken the wires for twigs used to build nests. It took nearly one hour for us to repair the transformer and restart the pumpsets.  Water supply only under Cauvery II stage was affected," said the official.

Despite receiving 900 MLD of water, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is unable to distribute water equally to all parts of the City. In order to streamline the supply, the Board is contemplating to reduce the supply time in core areas.

Procedure

BWSSB official said that valvemen follow a certain procedure, in which they identify a last house and divert the supply only after that houses receives water. Even the Board is not happy with this practice and wishes to reduce the hours of supply to certain areas so that equitable distribution of water to all areas can be maintained.

There are rules under the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board Act, according to which the Board itself can take a decision to reduce the supply of water in certain areas, added the official.
