Speaking to NGO workers at the International Women's Day organised by Karnataka State Social Welfare Board (KSSWB) on Thursday, Prema said government schemes were doing well, since they got more funds compared to Board schemes.

"Schemes like Swadhar, Santwana and Baalawadi are being duplicated with government schemes like Integrated Child Development Services. There are plans to merge all the schemes under one scheme and the Board is in discussion with the Centre," she said.

“There is a need for innovative ideas rather than traditional employment methods to empower women and to give them financial independence. Once the schemes get merged, NGO workers will get better payment and on time,” Prema said.

Leader of the Opposition in the Council Motamma said distributing sarees to women would not empower women. Along with Bhagyalakshmi bonds, women could be given Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 to start their own small business, she suggested.

Small loans

"Government should start schemes like ‘santegaagi saala,’ through which women can be given small loans to start business like selling fruits or flowers. Women should be encouraged to become financially independent," she said.

Motamma said women working in NGOs must enter politics and create a name for themselves. They must work with lawmakers to solve women-related problems, she added.
