Inspiring many young minds

Interactive Programme
Last Updated 11 April 2011, 12:56 IST

He was none other than former President Abdul Kalam who inspired the young minds with his words.

His vision about India, his concern for the underprivileged people and his love for the students had won him many admirers across the country and the students of Kristu Jayanthi College too became his admirers after their interaction with him.

Abdul Kalam was the chief guest of this year’s Vicharmanthanam, an annual interactive programme with national and global visionaries, organised by the college.  This time, the enthusiasm and expectations of the students were running high with the participation of the former President.

They had come all prepared with a set of questions for the interaction and were eager to get their doubts cleared. Abdul Kalam had come with a firm message — The message of rural upliftment and providing urban amenities in rural areas.

“India needs a few unique minds who can transform the lives of others. We need to act more responsibly. There are lot more things to be done in areas like power generation, healthcare, education and agriculture. To beat the economic turbulence and to secure our future, we need to bring down the disparity between urban and rural areas which can be achieved with the help of educated and self-motivated youth,” he said.

He cited several success stories from the lives of great achievers and put forth a case study of a village in Maharashtra, which has achieved tremendous growth with the help of cooperative movement.

He also administered oaths to the students and requested them to work with integrity. “I will never forget this day,” says Rubi Kuruvila after receiving a prize from the former President for securing a gold medal in MSW and adds, “He is so amazing and active even at this age. I am impressed by his energy level. He spoke more about social service and rural upliftment which is my work area. I wish more time could be given to interaction.

Still, we are glad because he responded to our request and came down to our college just to meet the students. That is enough for us”.  Father Josekutty P D, Principal of Kristu Jayanthi College, Aloysious Edward, convenor of Vicharmanthan, were also present on the occasion.
