The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is planning to establish 16 methane gas plants across the City as part of its garbage disposal mechanism.

Following a power-point presentation by officials from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) here on Monday, Mayor S K Nataraj said gas and power would be produced at the methane plants using the waste generated in the City.

Scientists at BARC have already been generating 50 kg of methane gas and 50 kg of manure per tonne of waste, the mayor said.

Rs five lakh per plant

He said each plant would be maintained by the BARC authorities for which Palike will have to bear the maintenance cost of Rs five lakh per plant. The project would be taken up on a pilot basis  at Aramanenagar ward on April 25.

Following a visit by corporators, the mayor and the deputy mayor to the BARC a year ago, to witness the methanisation process, the Palike signed an MoU with the BARC.

A team led by Sharad Kale from BARC made the power-point presentation on the garbage disposal mechanism.
