If you are a practicing veterinarian and have been planning to upgrade your skills, but only, you don’t have the option of leaving town, or the luxury of taking a break from your practice to pursue a full time post graduate programme, then, help is at hand.

The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) located at Chennai, now offers through the distance education mode, several skill-oriented postgraduate diploma programmes in important niches of veterinary practice.

“Many veterinarians now attend short-term programmes and undergo practical training for two or three days, which is not adequate. This prompted the university to start these PG Diploma courses”, says TANUVAS Vice-chancellor Dr R Prabakaran.

The new array of courses are PG Diploma programmes in the disciplines of veterinary orthopaedics, veterinary ophthalmology, ethno veterinary practices, small animal internal medicine, small animal emergency and critical care management, small animal cardiology, and small animal dermatology.

Only veterinarians are eligible to take up these programmes. However, two other long distance programmes in animal sciences, not coming under the purview of veterinary sciences are also on offer. They are PG diploma programmes in feed manufacturing technology and commercial poultry production and management, and persons with any basic degree can apply for these courses.

A deeply entrenched network

The course will draw from the experience accumulated by the university, thanks to the fact that TANUVAS has four constituent colleges, such as the Madras Veterinary College at Chennai, Veterinary College and Research Institute at Namakkal, Fisheries College and Research Institute at Thoothukudi, and the Institute of Food and Dairy Technology.

Besides this, 15 Veterinary University Training and Research Centres and one Regional Research Centre operate under TANUVAS. And since the University constantly collaborates with the farming community, giving them inputs on livestock and poultry farms, it has developed a huge network of practicing professionals in the arena.

TANUVAS also operates the acclaimed Institute of Poultry Production and Management and the Center of Advanced veterinary faculty training in Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Ethics and Jurisprudence.

Course structure

The new PG diploma programmes have been planned as one year programmes comprising of two semesters, with curriculum designed by the university faculty. While the course material will be disseminated to the students through online and print mode, at the end of each semester, students will however have to come to the university for a 10-day, hands-on-training programme.

Students will also have to present a case study at the end of each semester, which will be evaluated for awarding of the diploma. Twenty to 30 students are to be admitted in each course, every year.

The courses commence from the coming academic year.  For more information, contact, The Registrar, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai-600 051, Tamil Nadu, India. Ph.: 044-25551586/87. Fax: 044 – 25551579. Or log on to www.tanuvas.ac.in
