For that ripple effect...

Last Updated 21 April 2011, 11:36 IST

From a distance this high-rise seems quite traditional.  So, what sets it apart from your run-of-the-mill skyscraper and gives it its “unique” status?

When you get close to this building you will notice a ripple curtain-like effect almost like jelly! According to the designers of the building this ripple, wavy effect is created by different sized balconies from top to bottom.

The curving edges were guided into place by a Global Positioning System!
The building is about 250 metres high and has 81 floors. Its architectural style is defined as “modernism.”

The uniqueness of the building is not restricted to its ripple effect; rather the façade has been designed to prevent bird collisions.

This is achieved by using not only the irregular curves of the balconies but using special glass that is opaque to birds. This is the world’s third tallest building designed by a female architect.  The Aqua consists of 736 residential units. Of these 262 are ownership units in the upper floors, and 474 are rental units in the middle floors.
