The 86-year-old spiritual leader died after a prolonged illness in Andhra Pradesh's Puttaparthi town today morning.

"In his demise, the world has lost a highly popular community leader whose mere presence was a source of inspiration to his followers. I pay my respects to the loving memory of Sathya Sai Baba," Sankaranarayanan said.

The Governor said in a condolence message that "Sai Baba of Puttarparthi was a fountainhead of goodness and love for humanity. He touched the life of millions of people, rich and the poor, across the world with his simple teachings and services to humanity."

The number of educational institutions, hospitals and community initiatives supported or established by him are a standing testimony of the immense good work he did in his life time, Sankaranarayanan said.
