BBMP prepares to bury wall tragedy

Last Updated 24 April 2011, 19:33 IST

The Palike authorities said there was no need for any inquiry into the wall collapse case.
To substantiate their argument, they said a no -parking sign board had been displayed at the spot, which people ignored at their peril.

They also said the 100-year-old wall could not stand the rain fury. Thus, there will not be any inquiry into the wall collapse case.

Old wall

"Our engineers have told me that people ignored the no parking sign board. Also it was an old wall," said the BBMP engineer-in-chief B T Ramesh.

However, the local residents, shopkeepers and the people who lost their vehicles rejected the BBMP’s argument, saying that there was no such board placed near the ill-fated wall.

Officials said the wall was surely old but was demolished last year for the ABVP convention.
The wall was later rebuilt and the interior portion was filled with soil to make it a parking lot. However, the 30-foot wall was built on the 100-year-old foundation, resulting in the tragedy.
