'Need for awareness on HIV/AIDS'

Speaking after inaugurating the workshop in-charge DC Prasanna Kumar informed that as many as 5,600 HIV patients are there in the entire district and about 350 deaths have taken place since 2002 in the district. Last year 41 pregnancy cases were tested positive among 7,474 pregnant women. This year, until June about 7,909 pregnancy cases were put to test, of which 21 cases are tested positive in the entire district. Even though the percentage (0.2%) has not crossed the alarming toll, there is a need for precautionary measures and awareness programmes to create consciousness regarding the disease among people, he added.

District Health Officer Dr M R Naik, District AIDS Control Officer Dr H Ashok, District information Officer Junjanna and others were present.
