AMU closed indefinitely after violence

Last Updated 30 April 2011, 18:35 IST

“The university has been closed sine die and all examinations have been cancelled. The students have been given 48 hours to vacate the hostel,” AMU spokesman Dr Rahat Abrar said. The decision was taken in view of the violence on the campus and on the basis of the reports by the district administration.

The varsity campus witnessed large-scale violence on Friday night after a student leader was allegedly roughed by a rival group in Aligarh, officials said.

The rival groups opened fire and indulged in heavy stone throwing.
The same group again allegedly opened fire when the students reached the proctor’s office to lodge a complaint a little while later.
