There are many incidences that leave a lasting mark on us, and many want to preserve them as memories that will last a lifetime. From penning diaries to writing poems and books, many also take the route of tattooing to get an impression of that particular thing.

Hasita Krishna says, “I have a simple sketch of a phoenix. This element symbolises rebirth and resilience. I chose to get it inked when I opted to become a different person, where there was no room for negativity and unnecessary things in my life.”

Talking about a difficult phase of her life, getting out of which she compares to rebirth, she adds, “After being sick for 2 years, I lost my job and used to sit idle most of the time; this depressed me and made me weak both mentally and physically. That was a bad phase of my life. Coming out of it was difficult. That was a period of time when I realised who would actually help me  out and who wouldn’t. Though I was not in a state to look after myself, still choosing to see a counsellor, eating healthy and taking care of myself on my own had a great impact on my life. That is what I consider as rebirth.” She is a freelance writer and is proud of herself for being able to turn things around in just a year. She got her tattoo done recently as she was on the lookout for a strong and symbolic one.

Be it small concentric circles or inscribing a name or a sentence spoken by a loved one, one can see both the young and the middle-aged getting themselves inked. Chandani Chawla, a professional who teaches Business English, and has also worked as a tattoo artist for 4 years in Chennai, says that the tattoo of the Buddha and a sacred purple lotus inked on her arm is one of the most significant ones among the other tattoos she has.

Explaining the significance of her tattoo, she says, “I have a personality resembling a warrior’s — rebellious, upfront and always hyper. The main motive behind getting a Buddha tattoo inked was the hope that I will find some peace in my life with it. Moreover, since I believe in the teachings of Lord Buddha, it is something I don’t regret being with me for a lifetime. The sacred lotus signifies how even though the lotus grows in mud, it is untouched by dirt; it is something that I look forward to as well — not allowing negativity to rule my  life under any circumstance.” Apart from this, Chandani has 4 other small tattoos, with all of them having religious meanings attached to them. Meanwhile, she is also pursuing her passion as a tattoo artist in Bengaluru and does it from home.

Believing in the phrase that ‘tattoos are forever’, Priyanka MP, a freelance tattoo artist, is particular about what she has got inked and how strong an influence the tattoos have in her life. She has 7 tattoos and each one of them holds a strong significance attached to her childhood. She says, “My latest tattoo is the most unique one, it is a tattoo inspired by the book I read — ‘The Nightingale and the Rose’ by Oscar Wilde, which is a story about how there is always someone who makes sacrifices for us. I have another tattoo inspired by one of my other reads ‘The Kite Runner’, and the special thing about it is that my mother and I got the same tattoo done on the same day. I believe that tattoos are something that someone literally takes with them to their grave.” Being a tattoo artist, it is a special feeling to ink people with memories that they will cherish forever.”
