Last Updated 26 July 2009, 19:07 IST

Siddaramaiah said that the government is doing grave injustice to the farmers by acquiring land worth Rs 2 crore to Rs 2.5 crore per acre at a paltry Rs 88,000.

He alleged that the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Minister for Rural Development Shobha Karandlaje and Ashok Kheny of NICE were direct benefactors from the acquisition. The acquisition of 1,900 acres of land has been proposed for the project in 16 villages of Bangalore South Taluk surrounding Mysore Road.

Siddaramaiah and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, V S Ugrappa (Cong) visited the proposed site for the NICE township on Sunday and interacted with the farmers.
A number of farmers are protesting against the proposed acquisition for the township. Lending his support to the protest, Siddaramaiah added that the government cannot acquire land for any developmental activities without the consent of farmers.

Meanwhile, V S Ugrappa warned the government that the Congress is not against development but will fight against all injustice.

He added that the project and the devices used to acquire land reeked of corruption and the Congress party will do all it can to save the land of the farmers.
