Successful acoustic experiment

Everybody knows that a Shaa’ir and Func evening is loud, boisterous and energetic with gyrating musicians taking the audience on a trip. So their latest trip into the City titled Shaa’ir and Func, The Acoustic Experiment generated a lot of curiosity.

Fans tumbled into a city-based restaurant which was hosting the duo, Monica Sharma Dogra and Randolph Savio Rosario Correia. Crowds gathered, got themselves a drink, twiddled their thumbs and waited for the band to take the mike. Eventually the event began at about 10.15 pm. That gave the musicians 45 minutes on stage.

The duo informed the gathering that it was the first time they were playing an acoustic set live. The set used unplugged instruments along side synthesisers. An interesting mix, the sounds were full and the progressions were engaging. The back beats gave the music more texture. Even hunched over his synthesiser, Randolph coaxed his guitar to do his bidding. Monica’s voice has a great timber, it would have been so much more of a pleasure to listen to her if she was a little more involved in the music and a little less engaged in performing it. While the music wins points for creativity, the lyrics, though bold, don’t.

An enthralled crowd is incapable of carrying on a conversation. The most it can do is utter inarticulate sounds of appreciation. At the Shaa’ir and Func concert, the buzz of human conversation was constant.

Talking about their music and playing in Bangalore, a City that is considered to prefer rock over much else, the duo said that while their music is considered electronica, their philosophy is more rock and roll. They said they believed in being fearless, in pushing boundaries with their music. In their opinion, they said, Bangaloreans make for a great audience because they are open to new music.

Shaa’ir and Func has had many really good concert, this wasn’t it. That said, one must mention that their new acoustic sound does sound promising. Hopefully, soon they’ll live that promise.
