Two child marriages prevented

Members of the Child Marriage Prevention Committee were tipped off that two children were being married off at Adbatti Layout in Gokak. Child Development Project Officer K H Vijaykumar acted swiftly and prevented the marriage.

It is the fifth such marriage prevented by the committee in the last two months.
Five-year-old Nagavva was to tie the knot with 13-year-old Kariappa. Parents of the bride and groom were taken to the police station and warned of the consequences of
child marriage. The children have been sent to the Child Protection Centre in Belgaum.

In another incident, in Honnur Gollarahatti of Davanagere taluk preparations were on to get S N Rekha (15) married to Lokesh (30). Village residents alerted officials of the Department of Women and Child Development about the marriage.

The officials, accompanied by the police, came to the spot and stopped the marriage.

The girl was forced to agree to the marriage, though she was keen on further studies.

The poverty in the family had forced her parents to decide on marrying her off.
