State SEZs' exports jump 82% to Rs 18.560 cr

The latest export figures are from the 20 operational SEZs which have total of 78 units operating in them, with total investments of Rs 13,805 crore and employment of 1,03,759 jobs.

Karnataka’s superlative performance was better than the national growth figures. In 2010-11 all SEZs in the country together achieved exports of Rs 3,15,867 crore clocking a growth of 43 per cent over Rs 2,20,711 crore in 2009-10, sources said. With total investments of Rs 2,02,810 crore, as on March 31, 2011, SEZs in the country, have provided a total of 6,76,608 jobs so far.  

In order to support and encourage development of SEZs, the State government, in 2009, announced the SEZ Policy providing package of incentives and supportive measures.  The Centre has, so far, provided formal approvals for setting up 57 SEZs in the State, with in-principle approvals granted to nine. The number of notified SEZs stands at 36. The proposed investment in the 36 notified SEZs is Rs 16,827 crore crore of which Rs 15,408 crore has been invested, sources said. 

Among 20 operational SEZs in Karnataka, Biocon Limited’s Biotech SEZ with six operational units has attracted investments of Rs 1,111.03 crore, while two IT SEZs promoted by Wipro Ltd has six units operational with total investment of Rs 397 crore. Bangalore also boasts of 10 other SEZs with total investment of Rs 6,176.36 crore.

Other SEZs in IT/ITeS space include — Adarsh Prime Projects Pvt Ltd’s, Manyata Promoters, Shamaraj & Co., Vikas Telecom, Tanglin Developments, ITPL, Bagmane Constructions, Primal Projects, HCL Technologies Ltd and Gopala Enterprises. Infosys Ltd has two SEZs in Mangalore and Mysore in the IT/ITeS sector.  Besides hi-tech engineering sector SEZ in Udupi by Synfra Enginnering & Construction Ltd., KIADB’s textile and food processing SEZs in Hassan, Quest Global’s precision engineeering SEZ in Belgaum are others.

Nine SEZs which have received in-principle approval proposed to investment Rs 20,269 crore with employment generation potential of 2,34,500. The Centre has provided formal approvals for 584 SEZs in the country of which 377 have been notified with 130 of them operational as on date.
