Till now nine phases of the elections have been held and the 10th phase is scheduled on Saturday. After that six more phases are to be held. The poll percentage keeps on fluctuating from 71 to 79 per cent.

A number of candidates and political activists have come under attack by militants.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman hard line faction of Hurriyat Conference and militant groups had asked the people to boycott the elections. But the call was by and large ignored.

“We are taking part in polls as we want good people to represent us at the grass root level in Panchayats. Our area was ignored in development. We now hope that after the formation of panchayats we will get justice,” said Tariq Ahmad of Baramulla district.
