An abduction that was not

Last Updated 23 May 2011, 19:10 IST

“It is not a case of abduction for ransom or extortion. The incident happened over a petty issue. The police ended the high drama within four hours by acting swiftly,” DCP (South East) Dr P S Harsha told reporters.

Akshay, son of Chandrashekar, is a second year PU science student at Ebenezer College at Singena Agrahara on Hoskur Road and resides with his parents at Govindshettypalya in Electronic City second phase. Akshay and his classmate Namitha (name changed) are good friends and exchanged messages over cellphones frequently. However, when their friendship came to the notice of Namitha’s brother Kishore Reddy, a garment factory owner, he decided to teach Akshay a lesson.

Reddy connived with his car driver Hemanth, his factory worker Narayan Reddy, and two other friends Girish and Shivaram for the purpose. The gang spotted Akshay riding a bike in Electronics City second phase and dragged him into the car (KA-01 MF-3055).
However, when Akshay didn’t return home, his elder brother Yeshvanth lodged a complaint with the police. Police immediately formed two teams and kept sending messages to Akshay’s cellphone to trace his location.
However, Reddy directed Shivaram Prasad to take Akshay in a different vehicle. Prasad hired an auto and forced Akshay into the vehicle, police said. The police stopped Reddy’s car near Varthur and took Reddy and others into custody. Based on their inputs, another team rescued Akshay at Kaigondarahalli on     Sarjapur Road.
