Sex determination test is a crime: Judge

He was speaking after inaugurating the free legal awareness camp organised at Singehalli, Khadripur taluk in Kolar, recently. The workshop was jointly organised by the District Advocates’ Association, District Legal Services Authority, Zilla Janaseva Samiti, and the Milk Producers’ Co-operative Society.

“Holding sex determination tests and passing on information about the sex of the unborn baby is a crime, as is female foeticide. More and more women are being exploited,” he said.
“Giving and taking dowry is a crime, and both the giver and taker are liable for punishment. It is a grievous offence to torture women in the name of dowry. All of us should make sincere attempts to get rid of the dowry menace,” Aradhya advised.

B N Lavanyalata, member secretary of the Legal Services Authority, advised the participants not to misuse the laws provided for welfare of the society.

Free services

Speaking on the occasion, the second Additional Civil Judge A Jayaprakash gave tips on the legal services available to the laypersons, free of cost.

K V Surendrakumar provided information on the registration of births and deaths.
“All of us should ensure that we register the births and deaths in our families, and collect the relevant documents,” he said. Advocate M P Narayanaswamy said, “All motorists should get their vehicles insured, and acquire driving licenses. These documents play a very important role in cases of accidents,” he explained.
