Sri Lanka finally saw the back of Alastair Cook at Sophia Gardens but only after he had shared another huge stand with fellow century-maker Jonathan Trott.

Trott then went on to post a big partnership with Ian Bell who was batting on 98 with Eoin Morgan at stumps with the score reading 491 for 5. Meanwhile, Kevin Pie-tersen’s well documented problems against left-arm spin continued when he was trapped in front of the wicket to Rangana Herath for just three.

A delivery kept low and skidded wickedly on to his pad and then bat. Umpire Billy Doctrove rejected the appeal but Sri Lanka were successful with the review. Pietersen was stationary for about 15 seconds before leaving the field, clearly disappointed not to be given the benefit of any doubt. Cook had added just four runs when he top-edged Farveez Maharoof and was caught by wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene.
