He, however, justified it saying there was “no alternative”.Speaking to reporters after attending a function in the capital on Monday, he said: “It is unfortunate that operation had to be conducted but quite honestly, there was no alternative.” Asked for his comment on the issue of civil society agitating on the issue of corruption, the prime minister said: “My government is concerned and serious about fighting corruption. But there is no magic wand to do so.”
The prime minister’s statement, however, elicited strong reaction from the Opposition parties. The BJP termed it “bizarre and insensitive.” Brinda Karat of the CPM said the prime minister’s explanation has failed to convince people.
