At least 3 dead, 22 hurt in Venezuela prison riot

Venezuelan Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami told the state-run Venezuelan News Agency that the death toll could rise.

He says the riot broke out Sunday afternoon following visits by inmates' relatives to the El Rodeo I prison. Miranda state Gov Henrique Capriles says on Twitter that about 27 inmates suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital.

El Aissami says the violence ended on Sunday night. Violence is common in Venezuela's crowded prisons, where rival gangs often fight for control of cell-blocks and sell weapons and drugs with the help of corrupt prison guards.
