Addressing reporters here on Thursday, Alam said “a delegation will meet Home Minister P Chidambaram to seek necesary action to protect the interest of minority in this part of Karnataka. No one should be given free hand to violate the Indian Constitutional values by taking law into their hands.”

“Islam stands for peace and for the dissemination of messages of love, equality, fraternity and justice which is also the essence in the preamble of Indian Constitution. The nation cannot become powerful, if there is no society based on Constitution,” he said. Everyone must be given opportunity to develop themselves, he said and added that one who treats others as enemies is lopsided.

“Let our country be free from pious and prejudice feelings. Let us stand together against inequality based on caste,” he emphasised.

Further, talking about growing instances of police encounters, he said that any encounter will be considered as murder by a court if police fail to prove it as encounter.

To a query on the Sachaar Committee report, Alam said that the BJP which opposed it in the early stage, has changed its mind and remained soft towards it. Because of the Sachar Committee report, the government sanctioned Rs 1,700 crore for education among Muslims, he said.

He said that there should be specific reservation for representation in Parliament for Muslims. “The number of Muslim MPs in the Parliament has reduced considerably from 49 to 21 at present,” he said adding that Muslims should be given quota.

Alam said that the government alone cannot implement development works if it was corrupt. Hence, he suggested, development works should be undertaken through NGOs. Only NGOs have larger platform to make our country powerful, he added.

Alam also had delivered the keynote address at the seminar on AIMC held at the Town Hall here on Thursday. AIMC Dakshina Kannada District President K S Mohammed Masood, General Secretary Ibrahim Kodijal and Seminar Reception Committee Chairman S M Rasheed were present.
