Panel to probe into TN secretariat construction

Last Updated 22 June 2011, 17:16 IST

Jayalalitha in May decided that her government will work from the Old Secretariat Complex, also known as Fort St. George. She directed the shifting of offices from the new Assembly complex as the latter’s construction was incomplete and caused inconvenience in having to function from two places.  The Old Assembly Hall that had been converted into a library for Classical Tamil studies by the previous government was also restored to its earlier form soon after ‘Amma’ became the chief minister.

A government notification issued late on Wednesday said that Justice S Thangaraj, retired judge of the Madras High Court, probe into the issue and   submit a report in three months. The panel has been constituted under the ‘Commissions of Inquiry Act’ 1952.

The panel will look into whether all statutory approvals for the construction had been obtained and whether there was any inordinate delay or deficiency in standards of construction in building the new Secretariat.
