When it comes to home decor, nothing lends a dramatic touch to your homes as the wall colours.

Believe it or not, it is the colour of the walls that determines the look of your home and, of course, your mood too.

Yes, with each colour having a distinct identity of its own, it’s only natural that colours influence both the look of our homes, our mood, and our general well-being.

An intelligent selection of colours for the walls, coupled with brilliant colour co-ordination can make any home gleam with glamour.

Colouring the walls of our homes in the hues of our choice is no mean task as each member in the family will have a different taste in colours.

While the younger ones would want a splash of fresh and lively colours, the older ones might prefer pastel shades.

However, if there is no clear consensus on the choice of colours, the best option would be to allow each person to the choose the colour of his or her room and paint the walls of the living room in a shade that represents your personal style and attitude.

After all, living rooms are all about making your personal style statement.

New shades in town

To add to the fun, life is no longer plain black, white, blue, red or yellow. There are myriad shades including blue-violet, green-yellow, red-orange etc.

And every colour has its own natural shine and attractiveness.

Consider this: while red is perceived as dramatic, bold, energetic and active, white is regarded as elegant, refreshing and bright, blue as cool, calm and peaceful, green as fresh, relaxing and rejuvenating, yellow as bright, intellectually stimulating and joyful, pink as soothing and friendly, and so on.

These days, the market is flooded with a plethora of options wherein we can opt for the shade of our choice and we can have it within minutes, by mixing and matching. It’s almost magical!

Options galore

To make matters easy for customers who find it hard to make a choice, the colours are mixed in the computer and the result is shown on-screen.

If we are still dogged by indecision, we can opt for the facility of shade tiles where a tile in the shade of our choice is given to us to take home and co-ordinate it with our furnishing.

While colours can actually lend glamour quotient to our homes, the role they play in accentuating the general ambience of our homes cannot be discounted.

Come to think of it, contrast is the style of the season.

It draws immediate attention.

Since colours of the same hue are considered boring, it is best to have the furnishings and the wall colours in contrasting shades.

Another recent trend was to have three walls of a room in one colour and the fourth one in an entirely different colour.

However, of late, this trend is seeing a decline with people preferring to dress up one wall of the room with interesting artefacts, masks or paintings, so as to draw all the attention and lend a dazzling effect to the overall look of the room.

Colour co-ordination

While dressing up the walls, it pays to give due consideration to the overall colour scheme of the house.

The right blend of warm and cool colours and some co-ordination and balance between the colour themes of different rooms can work wonders to transform the look of the house.

For instance, if blue is your choice of colour, then maybe you can check out different shades of blue for each room.

While the living and dining rooms can have a light shade of blue, the bedroom can have a brighter shade and the children’s room can have the brightest shade.

Colours can actually be played around to give each space a unique personality.

Though there are umpteen theories about the choice of wall colours, always remember that it is your choice that matters the most because it is, after all, your home.

Also, check out some new trendy colours and define your uniqueness. Always opt for freshness of approach.

Your walls also give you an opportunity to get arty.

Think of your walls as a huge canvas and let your creativity work wonders on them in terms of colour.

Here’s one suggestion, though.

The lighter the shade of your walls, the better it is for the interior of the house.

Lighter shades reflect light better and create a feeling of space.

So go on and create magic on the walls.
