But the trend seems to be changing this year with more students preferring private, autonomous institutions to government ones. What are the reasons for this? While some say the infrastructure and exposure of these colleges are better, others feel that the entire admission procedure itself is hassle-free. Metrolife speaks to the students, who are also engineering aspirants, to find out more.

Sujith Kumar N, Student

“The end result of any form of education is to help you acquire a job and choose a suitable career for yourself. In this regard, the main aspect that should be taken into consideration is the quality of placements a college has. Nobody will want to stay jobless after completing their studies. If a college can guarantee you a placement, it is good. Also what one should keep in mind before choosing a college is how good are the companies which would come to recruit you. I feel private institutions provide far better opportunities to students in this aspect.”

Krishna Chaitanya, Student

“At the national level, I think government colleges are the most preferred as they have better funding from the government. But when it comes down to the CET level, private colleges are better any day. Students search for colleges with good infrastructure. I feel autonomous colleges have better and improved facilities. For most engineering and medical students, the infrastructure is of utmost importance — be it the labs or libraries — which not all government colleges concentrate on.”

Shreya Nagesh, Student

“It is a known fact that teaching facility in a private college is far better than that in a government college. The main reason for this maybe because private colleges place a lot of importance on learning rather than just studying. They mould you in all aspects and not just in the subjects you have chosen. The campus also is better equipped with good teaching rooms and advanced methods of teaching like AV rooms, Plasma TVs and others. You may be charged a higher fee since it is private but what matters more is that you will be getting a much higher quality of education.”

Namratha B C, Student

“A lot of government colleges have quite a good reputation. But I feel they lack good infrastructure. Good facility is the most important criteria as there will be a lot of practical sessions. If there are good learning facilities like libraries, study labs etc, it makes studying a lot more easy. Another reason why I think a private college is better is because the medium of teaching is strictly English, which may not be the case in government colleges. The faculty too is much more equipped and qualified which helps the students a lot.”

 Varsha Ravi, Student

“College life doesn’t consist only of studies. There are a whole lot of other things that need to be taken into consideration too. A college should have good amenities so that the students can benefit from them. Most of the private institutions place a lot of importance on extracurricular activities like cultural programmes, sports etc. The same facilities may not always be offered by a government college. We students need to feel secure and productive within the campus. Campus recruitments in private institutions are also comparatively better.”

 Ajay Singhvi, Student

“Of course, it doesn’t matter if a college is government or private. But nowadays, the options for government colleges are lesser as many colleges have become autonomous. These private colleges have their own syllabus and exam policy which are an added advantage. There will be extensive areas which will be covered in the curriculum. It is true that one will have to spend more in the form of academic fees. But what is more important than that is the quality of education offered by these private institutions.”
