NGOs find three busy stretches unsafe for pedestrian use

Last Updated 18 July 2011, 19:21 IST

On Monday evening, children from Tilaknagar took to the roads trying to cross the busy stretch near the Sanjay Gandhi Trauma Care Centre bus stop, but found it extremely difficult as there is no zebra crossing or traffic signals.

As a result, they had to wait for three minutes to cross one part of the road and another minute and 10 seconds from the median to the other end of the road.

At the traffic junction further down the stretch, the children had to wait for a whole five minutes to cross the junction where vehicles converge from three different directions. It is learnt that the situation was even worse for senior citizens who tried to cross the road along with children. Chandra Ravikumar, a resident of Jayanagar, in fact failed to cross the road even after three attempts.

At the other end of the town along the Old Airport Road, near Diamond District, residents faced a tough time while crossing the road.

With no signals, zebra crossings or a break in traffic, residents had to wait for at least two and a half minutes to reach the median from one side and another three minutes to cross to the other side of the road.
