Sonia Gandhi out of ICU

Last Updated 06 August 2011, 19:26 IST

“UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi remained in the ICU for 24 hours and has thereafter been moved out from there. Her family has expressed gratitude on her behalf for all the messages and good wishes that have been sent to her from her well-wishers,” said Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi.

Sonia is understood to have undergone a surgery for cervical cancer at Memorial Sloan—Kettering Cancer Centre private hospital in New York on Thursday.  The surgery, conducted by a team of doctors led by leading Indian-American physician Dattatreyudu Nori, took about an hour, said the sources.

The Congress chief may have to spend up to a month’s time for post-surgery follow-up treatment. Her son Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka and son-in-law Robert Vadra are with her.
