A boulevard beneath Metro at Jayanagar

The decision was taken during BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah’s inspection of Jayanagar constituency on Saturday. MLA B N Vijay Kumar and local corporators pointed out to him that since the construction of the flyover was almost complete, a beautification drive must be carried out on the stretch.

The stretch where the Metro flyover has come up had a green canopy with hundreds of trees lining both sides of the road. But the grand old trees had to be sacrificed to pave the way for the project. Now that the Metro Rail work is nearing completion, the public representatives asked the commissioner to develop a boulevard with good number of trees on both sides.

Heeding their demand, the commissioner instructed his subordinates to prepare a detailed project report so that the work could be started at the earliest. He also assured the public representatives that funds crunch would not come in the way of developing a landscape beneath the Metro track.

Drains and footpath

Shoddy construction of drains and footpaths at Jayanagar 5th Block left the commissioner fuming. He ordered an inquiry into the work.

During the inspection of the ongoing development projects in the constituency, Siddaiah noticed the substandard quality of work on a stretch of nearly a kilometre on 9th Main Road. Vijay Kumar and a local corporator complained to the commissioner that contractor M Ramesh was using old stone slabs instead of new ones for the footpaths, and also that the quality of mortar was substandard. Taking note of the complaints, the commissioner ordered an inquiry and assured them that further action would be initiated based on the inquiry report.

Palike engineers, however, defended the contractor saying the tender agreement allows contractors to reuse old slabs of stone by dressing them properly. They said the cost of the work was Rs 1.1 crore.
